Climate Change Mitigation & Adaptation
The California Marine Sanctuary Foundation provides leadership and technical expertise in the planning and implementation of projects that improve California's climate resiliency.
Regional Adaptation for Climate Resilience of Monterey Bay Coastal Communities
On July 26th, 2024 CMSF was awarded one of the largest single grants in the history of California after being selected to receive funding through NOAA’s Climate Resilience Regional Challenge. This transformational grant, with funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, will bring over $71 million into the Monterey Bay area and provide Climate Resilience Adaptation funds for dozens of projects led by CMSF and a coalition of 21 partners including local governments, academic institutions, and other nonprofits. The timeline for this project is October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2029.
Offshore Renewable Energy
The overarching challenge with the development of new industries or technologies is trying to anticipate their effects on the environment.
In coordination with the Ocean Protection Council and in collaboration with over 100 scientists, CMSF is leading the development of a neutral, transparent, and science-based environmental monitoring guidance for California's emerging offshore wind industry.
